Huitzilopochtli, the patron of warriors, had as his insignia ankle bells. Sahagún (1950–82, book III: 3–4) recorded that in Huitzilopochtli’s cosmic battle with his 400 brothers, the latter arrayed themselves as if for war, binding little bells to the calves of their legs. Nonetheless, Huitzilopochtli killed them using his serpent of fire. The event is commemorated in myth and translated by Miguel León-Portilla (1969, 47):

In vain they tried to rally against him,

in vain they turned to attack him,

rattling their bells,

and clashing their shields

Nothing could they do,

Nothing could they gain,

With nothing could they defend themselves.
